Saturday 1 January at 11.35 (local timd) Salvador was hit by a violent earthquake - 7.8# Richter scale. The epicentre was 105 kms South-East of San Salvador. Immediately after the first tremour, which lasted more than 30 seconds, 569 aftershocks were reported, some of which were very violent. The ground also continued to shake in the following days.
The toll of the victims is increasing hour by hour and has already exceeded 700 people.
More than 20,000 people have remained homeless and have been evacuated, 45,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged. .
