The Community of Sant’Egidio remembers Zygmunt Bauman as a great intellectual who has interpreted the great changes of contemporary society with depth, and as an outstanding humanist committed to the vision of living together. The memory of his participation in the most recent international peace meetings, organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio ‘in the spirit of Assisi’ is vivid. During these meetings, Bauman articulated with conviction his vision of the necessity of a dialogue between nonbelievers and believers for building peace and a more inclusive society. He also did so last September, when he had a private conversation with Pope Francis in Assisi during the 30th anniversary of the meeting of 1986 organized by John Paul II. With Bauman we have lost a visionary of our time who was able to look to the future of Europe and the world.
