On Monday, March 5th, a mission of the Community of Sant’Egidio reached the little town of Kositei in the district of East Pokot at ca. 300 km North of Nairobi for another distribution of food. Even if the meteorological circumstances have slightly improved, the population continues to suffer for the limited availability of food.
About 300 persons joined together near the little church of the town to receive corn, beans and cooking oil – a total of 10 tons. These will allow a large number of families to have food for several weeks.
The semi-dry consistence of the land, worsened by the lack of rain, does not allow a sufficient production of farming. The hope lies that the coming rain season – if regular – will contribute to improving the living conditions of the 40.000 inhabitants of the area. Since last August the Community of Sant’Egidio, in collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru, has distributed approximately 40 tons of food to the local population.
