On 27 January the Day of Memory is celebrated. On that day, 70 years ago, in 1945, the opening of the gates of Auschwitz showed the world the horror of the Holocaust. Anti-Semitism, racism, nationalism become idolatry of race, had pushed Europe into the abyss of evil.

To remember the Shoah is not only to keep alive the memory of the past, but above all to grow and defend a new European culture of peace and living-together.

In these days and at different times of the year, the Community of Sant'Egidio is particularly close to the brothers of the Jewish religion, in prayer and in the promotion of initiatives to safeguard and spread the Memory.
