Port-au-Prince (Haiti) – Children partying in the protected house of the Community of Sant’Egidio, while the city is still waiting to be rebuilt

printable version

The streets in Haiti are still plenty of wreckage and the sign of the earthquake are still evident, after one whole year from the event. The rebuilding is going very slow and many inhabitants of Port au Prince are still dismantling the destroyed houses to flatten the ground out to start building the new places.

The scene totally changes behind the fence of the Protected House of the Community of Sant’Egidio, opened a few months ago in the capital city in Haiti.

In the streets of Port au Prince

Nel cortile della casa famiglia

Here everything is colourful: the flourished plants, the children games, the coloured windows. Qui è tutto un trionfo di colori: le piante fiorite, i giochi dei bambini, le vetrate colorate.
The 15 small guests of the protected house, built up by the Community and supported by the Notre Dame Congregation RCC, lost everything in the earthquake.

Some of them, after their houses were destroyed, found a refuge in a poor shanty town just outside the city; some others, who lost their families, were hosted by nuns.

They arrived to the protected house being malnourished and having a number of other diseases. They were not speaking, they were not smiling.

Today they are completely transformed. In the house there is a lively noise: they sing, they play.

They all attend the school or the kindergarten. French lesson started lately. The schock of the earthquake and the sorrow of those terrible days are a memory fading day by day.
