Mister President, Mister Prime Minister, Beatitudes, Eminences, excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, dear friends, on behalf of the Community of Sant’Egidio I have the pleasure to welcome you to the opening of this international peace meeting in Tirana with the challenging title: “ Peace is always possible”.
Pershendes nga zemera te gjith shqiptaret qe me interes dhe simpati ndihmojn ta realizojn punen e komunitetit Sant’Egidio, per njerzit ne nevoj dhe per paqen ne Shqiperi. (Saluto con affetto i tanti Albanesi che con interesse e simpatia seguono e aiutano a realizzare il lavoro di Sant’Egidio per i poveri e per la pace in questo paese).
Ladies and gentlemen, for almost 30 years men and women of different religions have gathered in the spirit of Assisi in a particular city in order to meet one another, to dialogue, to face together the challenges of our time and to find ways of peacefully living together, both locally and globally. The title “peace is always possible” is the affirmation of the intuition of Assisi lived by a growing participation of religious and political leaders, but it also refers with realism to the difficult time that we face in which peace is “still” possible, even when we hear and see around us strong signs of resignation and even pessimism. Our today’s world needs renewal and refreshing of the old dream of peace and living together.
Rivolgo un benvenuto affettuoso a tutti gli amici della comunità di Sant’Egidio che sono venuti in più di 2.000 dall’Italia e da diversi paesi europei: sono venuti per vivere questo momento di pace in un tempo difficile e per aiutare a realizzare questo incontro. Per Sant’Egidio l’Albania non è un paese qualunque: una lunga amicizia nata già nei primi anni ’90 ci lega a voi. Tanti volontari italiani ed europei hanno traversato il mare di indifferenza per socorrere i rifugiati kossovari e per aiutare fedelmente la crescita sociale e democratica del paese. Tra Sant’Egidio e l’Albania c’è una grande amicizia che oggi acquiste un nuovo valore. Siamo contenti di scrivere una nuova tappa nel dialogo tra le religioni proprio in questo paese.
I’m honoured to introduce you during this opening session the prestigious panel of speakers I warmly welcome here. First, I would like to give the floor to Mister Blendi Klosi, minister of Welfare and youth of Albania and chairman of the interministerial committee for the organization of this meeting. Thank you for your generous cooperation, and in this occasion I want to extend also our thanks to the European Union, which made possible the full realization of this meeting.
