It is sad to note that Europe and the entire international community are not able to prevent the continuous slaughter of entire families in the Mediterranean. Instead of arguing for the obligatory shares of reception or even proposing walls to defend against alleged invasions, action must be taken as soon as possible to prevent the number of victims resemble more and more the death toll of a real war, fought by desperate people that have the only fault to have be born in countries where violence and hunger reign.
The Community of Sant'Egidio launches a strong appeal for us not to get used to the daily bulletin of the massacres of the sea. To avoid the crossings at risk of death it is necessary as soon as possible:
- to open humanitarian channels from Africa and the Middle East;
- to grant permits for humanitarian reasons.
At the same time, it is necessary to increase, with all possible means, the negotiations to reach some localised truces - premise for peace - in countries affected by conflict, with the mediation of the international community, starting from the most involved States in the different areas of crisis . We remind everyone that the real emergency is not the refugees, who continue to die, but the wars that make them flee from countries like Syria where living becomes increasingly difficult if not impossible. |
