On 16 October 1943, during the Nazi occupation of Rome, more than 1,000 Roman Jews were caught and deported to the concentration camp of Auschwitz. Only a small number, 16 people, including only one woman, returned to their homes.

70 years after the deportation of the Roman Jews, the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Jewish Community of Rome, as every year since 1994, remember this tragic moment of the life of the city, organising a "pilgrimage of the memory", so that everyone, especially the young generations, do not forget the deportation that took place during the Nazi occupation.
